Over the past few days I have been actively thinking about naming the startup. I just wanted to write down all that went on in my blog.
My dad suggested that there are lots of "RK Enterprises" and probably KRK Enterprises or KRK Holdings would be a good name. As appealing as it is to have a company named after me (or alteast my initials), I didn't want to have my ego tied up to the success of the company. There is no doubt in my mind that this company will be anything but a visionary global enterprise but I don't want the success of the company to bloat my ego. So anything with my name is ruled out.
My basis for name selection is similar to what Akio Morita used for naming SONY SONY. If you are interested in knowing more, you can read more about it in his book "Made in Japan". Anyway I went through some names and finally decided on Cressida. The complete list of names I considered is given below:
KRK Enterprises
Karumanchi Commercial Holdings
Karumanchi Investment Corporation Limited
Crescent Investment Corporation Limited - one who creates
Cressida Investment Corporation Limited – golden
Cliantha Investment Corporation Limited – Flower of glory
Chenoa Investment Corporation Limited – White Dove
Cecania Ivestment Corportation Limited – Free
Candida Ivestment Corportation Limited – white, pure
Ananya Ivestment Corportation Limited – Matchless
Amdis Ivestment Corportation Limited – Immortal
Alyssa Ivestment Corportation Limited – Logical
Althea Ivestment Corportation Limited – Healer, Wholesome
Akanke Ivestment Corportation Limited – to know her is to love her
Aislinn Ivestment Corportation Limited – a dream, a vision, inspiration.
Achyuta Ivestment Corportation Limited – Indestrcutible
Ameya Ivestment Corportation Limited – boundless, magnanimous
Amulya Ivestment Corportation Limited – priceless
Medha Ivestment Corportation Limited – Intelligence, Saraswathi
Mugdha Ivestment Corportation Limited – Innocent
Poorvi Ivestment Corportation Limited – A classical melody
Cressida sounded impressive to me and I chose that as the name. A while after that I was reading "Losing my virginity" by Richard Branson and his company is named "The Virgin Group". The "The Cressida Group" seemed very apt. Unfortunately, the Registrar of Companies is not happy about the use of the word "Group", so we moved on to "Cressida Capital". Even that was not approved. Finally we got the name Cressida Holdings approved by Registrar of Companies. So the parent company is called Cressida Holdings.
Right now I am looking for a meaningful name for the mutual fund retailing subsidiary. Here's a list of names I'm playing around with :
Minerva - power;thinker
Melinda - gentle one
Magna - large
Magnolia - flower
Magnus - large;the great
Naida - Water Nymph
Nediva - Noble and generous
Nemo - No name, nobody
Neola - youth full
Neoma - New moon
Paloma - Dove
Panthea - Of all the gods
Placida - Tranquility
Pragati - Progress
Pragya - Wisdom
Galina - light
Casper – Treasurer
How does Chenoa FinServices sound? How about Casper FinServices?

I think Minerva is cool, although I think it has been taken.
Whats with latin names ? Is modern /snazzy not the done thing for mutual funds ? Some examples from my dad's company for their fundas are Vista, Supra ..
Similarly, aren't you worried that the big Japanese car compay is going to sue your derriere if you becoming big enuf ? Cressida i.e.
I think Minerva sounds good too. Why was cressida capital not acceptable?
Yeah. Minerva is cool but all Indian names are taken. So I have to go for greek & latin.
Cressida. Duh! I didn't know Toyota had a car named Cressida. Yeah when Cressida Holdings becomes big then it could be a problem. Then again if we are big, it won't be such a big problem to handle a lawsuit by Toyota.
Casper sounds like a good name.
